Spectator Sports
The United States has eight major spectator sports: baseball, football, basketball, ice hockey, auto racing, golf, tennis and rodeo. Star athletes in these sports may receive immense salaries, and make even more money by endorsing and advertising various products, often athletic shoes and clothing. Dozens of other spectator sports--from ice skating to sailboat racing--are popular. If you attend a sporting event or game at a stadium, you will probably be able to find an American--or several--who will be delighted to explain the game to you in great detail. Be prepared to take notes.
