Because health concerns have potentially great financial impact, the choice of health insurance invoves major financial decisions.
Health insurance takes care of expenses for doctor visits, hospitalization, prescription drugs and other health-care costs. The United States does not have national health insurance. It is up to the individual to purchase health insurance or to find employment where health insurance is included as part of the compensation package.
As with any other product, the purchaser must weigh the cost of the insurance against the benefits. Fine-tuning health coverage to cover a reasonable level of risk can often be the best financial strategy.
The mechanics of health insurance are covered in greater detail under Medical Care.
