Disability insurance is designed to keep part of your income coming in even if you are unable to work as a result of accident or illness. It is best viewed as an adjunct or addition to health insurance.
If you are part of the social security system, you will be partly covered. As with any form of insurance, it is up to you to determine whether your money will be well spent for disability insurance.
The workings of diability insurance are quite intricate, and are covered in greater detail under Medical Care.
