Growing Up in America
The great youth film of the 1950's was Rebel without a Cause (1955). The subject of youth in America has been treated in many different ways. Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) is a typical light-hearted beach movie. The Graduate (1967) made a statement about society's values from a young man's perspective. The Last Picture Show (1971) shows small town American youth in despair, while American Graffiti (1973) shows similar youth having a bit more fun growing up. The musical Saturday Night Fever (1977) covered restless urban youth. Breaking Away (1979) is an inspiring movie about youthful achievement in the world of bicycle racing. The warm and wonderful Diner (1982) rings true about American attitudes in the 1950's. Risky Business (1983) and Sixteen Candles (1984) are two of the best of many teenage sex comedies of the 1980's. Dead Poets Society (1989) is a moving film about a group of boys in a private school and their iconoclastic teacher.
