The American West
The American West has also been a subject of Hollywood since motion pictures began. High Noon (1952) and Shane (1953) each portray a rugged individualist American hero standing up for what is right. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Broken Arrow (1950) explore the American experience of taming the West. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) was one of the first "Alternative" Westerns (the heroes are outlaws). Little Big Man (1970) is a wonderful but tragic film about the conflict between the white man and the Indians. Silverado (1985) makes fun of all the westerns that came before it.
