Crime and Detection
From the light-hearted The Thin Man (1934) to the frightening Shadow of a Doubt (1943), crime has always fascinated Americans. Asphalt Jungle (1950) and On the Waterfront (1954) are two classic of the 1950's. The heros of Bonnie & Clyde (1967) are depression-era bank robbers. The tough, flinty American hero shines through in Dirty Harry (1971) and the enigmatic Chinatown (1974). The Godfather (1972) stands alone as the great movie about organized crime, while Prizzi's Honor (1985) and Goodfellas (1990) add a certain lighter perspective to the subject.
