Landlords and Problems
The landlord will be responsible for most of the building maintenance, and may even be responsible for painting your apartment, depending on local laws. You will be responsible for keeping your apartment in reasonably good condition. If you damage the apartment beyond ordinary "wear and tear" the landlord might be justified in keeping you security payment after you move out.
If you don't pay the rent for a certain period of time, the landlord will try to get you to leave
the apartment by going to court and getting an eviction order. This can take some time. If you
have a legitimate grievance with the landlord, you might be entitled to withhold rent
but you will have to follow certain rules depending on your area; you can't simply stop
paying. If you cannot afford a lawyer to help you, many local government agencies can give
you free assistance.
